A penalization technique applied to the ''Volume-Of-Fluid'' method: wettability condition on immersed boundaries

چکیده
A penalization approach is presented to simulate two-phase flow in the presence of immersed solid boundaries so as to consider highly complex objects such as porous media microstructures. Based on the standard Volume-Of-Fluid formulation, the method takes into account the wettability effects which may occur on the surface of immersed solid boundaries. A spatial shift between the no-slip and the wettability conditions is introduced to make the method stable, regardless of the simulation parameters. The penalized VOF model and the numerical choices are then validated by a series of tests on capillarydominated flows, which represent the most challenging cases for VOF simulations.

Granular flow simulation using CFD has received a lot of attention in recent years. In such cases, CFD is either, coupled with Discrete Element Method (DEM) techniques for appropriate incorporation of inter-particle collisions, or the Eulerian CFD approach is used in which granular particles are treated as they were fluid. In the present study, a CFD analysis was performed...

متن کاملA Simplified Curved Boundary Condition in Stationary/Moving Boundaries for the Lattice Boltzmann Method
Lattice Boltzmann method is one of computational fluid dynamic subdivisions. Despite complicated mathematics involved in its background, end simple relations dominate on it; so in comparison to the conventional computational fluid dynamic methods, simpler computer programs are needed. Due to its characteristics for parallel programming, this method is considered efficient for the simulation of ...
متن کاملAn immersed boundary method for two-fluid mixtures
We present an Immersed Boundary method for interactions between elastic boundaries and mixtures of two fluids. Each fluid has its own velocity field and volume-fraction. A penalty method is used to enforce the condition that both fluids' velocities agree with that of the elastic boundaries. The method is applied to several problems: Taylor's swimming sheet problem for a mixture of two viscous f...
متن کاملA Characteristic-Based Volume Penalization Method for Arbitrary Mach Flows Around Solid Obstacles
Volume penalization is a subclass of immersed boundary methods for modeling complex geometry flows, which introduces the effects of obstacles by modifying the governing equations. The method presented in this paper encompasses general boundary conditions as an extension of the Brinkman Penalization Method (BPM) [1], which was originally developed for solid, isothermal obstacles in incompressibl...
